So, I’m setting up this here blog, and I decide I like this template. The white/grey-on-black look is striking without being garish, and the clean, minimal style is tasteful and attractive. Great. So what happens? The whole thing is ruined by the garish ad at the top of the page. Having looked at some other Blogger-based blogs, it seems that it would go away if I hosted this myself somewhere else, but, alas, my webspace will soon be disappearing and I haven’t figured out what to do about replacing it yet, so I guess I’ll have to put up with this for the moment. Maybe I’ll switch to another template, one that isn’t so spoiled by it, at least until I’ve got some vaguely permanent web hosting somewhere.
Another disappointing thing is Blogger’s ‘User Profile’ page. I frankly couldn’t care less what someone’s astrological sign (Chinese or otherwise) is, and I don’t see why anyone else should. But rather than display my actual date of birth, which I entered in the profile, it gives my age and star sign instead, and (as far as I can tell) I can’t change it. Age – cool. I’s nice having that calculated and displayed. But I find vaguely insulting the suggestion that I would want to tell someone my star sign. Ah, well; such is life.
I suppose the next things to sort out will be some biographical information to go in the profile, probably a few links, and maybe a photo. But it’s just gone three in the morning, so that can wait ’til tomorrow. I’m going to bed.
