Can a letterbox be rigged with a melodeon to make the postman’s ears ring so much that he staggers away in the same manner as someone who’s drunk?

Over here, it’s a letterbox whether it’s an actual box or a slot in the door. If the postman delivers post into it, it’s a letterbox.

Slots that are actually within a house door itself, as I presumed RAF was referring to, are indeed called mailsots. Whether it is properly one word or two (mail slot), I really don’t know as I’ve seen it both ways.

“Letterboxes” are called mailboxes over here. And to add more confusion, a freestanding mailbox may sometimes actually have a slot in it as well as a hinged door access, but they are still called mailboxes.

Do they really call a letterbox a ‘mailslot’ on your side of the Atlantic, or are you just trying to spread confusion and discord?

And you’re both still even further off than Haloscan’s comment count (I have no idea why it’s doing that, and I don’t think there’s anything I can do about it, either).

Your local mail deliverer was standing in front of your house to deliver an envelope. While he was steering to the gap in the door (how the hell do you call that in English?) you decided to sqeeze the box for take 3 of the song. The man was scared shitless (along with all neighbourhood cats) and bumped his head into a light pole. You heard that sound and assumed he was drunk?
