BBC NEWS: Britons unconvinced on evolution ignorant morons
Apparently, less than half of Britons are convinced that the Theory of Evolution fully accounts for the origin of life on Earth. Worse, 44% believe that creationism should be part of the school curriculum. Let us hope this latter group never become a majority.
Now, admittedly, this is not as bad as, for example, the US, where only 15% believe in evolution as a process in which God doesn’t directly interfere. But still, those are some scary figures all the same.
I think Richard Dawkins summed it up best when he said that “anyone who doesn’t believe in evolution is either stupid, ignorant or insane.” It is so easy to forget how many stupid, ignorant or insane people there are out there. There are more nutters out there than we realise, and while the fact that the religious idiots mostly keep quiet and don’t make a fuss is generally a mercy, it does also serve to lull one into a false sense of security.
