Injury, Painting and Wave Serpents

On Wednesday night, I was cleaning up some models with a scalpel, and I got up to get some more from out of the box. I’m still not sure how, but somehow the scalpel slipped out of my hand and fell through the second toe of my right foot. I use the word ‘through’ quite deliberately; the blade went into the side of my toe and the end came out of the bottom. So I’ve been walking with something of a limp for the past few days.

In addition, the end of my toe is now slightly numb; the blade evidently damaged a nerve or some nerves as it went through. Apparently this might recover in a few months, but it might be permanent. Fortunately, the extent to which I actually need full sensation in one toe isn’t that great, so if it doesn’t recover completely it won’t be too much of a problem getting used to one of my toes being numb.

Meanwhile, I’ve made a start on painting up my Epic Eldar army. So far I’ve painted up one Guardian Warhost (7 Guardian stands and one Farseer) and four stands of Wraithguard. I’ve also got the Avatar based and under-coated, and I’m hoping to get him painted tomorrow. Not sure what to do after that. It’ll either be some Rangers or a few Wave Serpents.

Talking of which, owing to a cock-up on behalf of Forge World, I now have 18 Wave Serpents with Starcannons. I originally ordered nine with Shuriken Cannons (the weapon that the Epic rules say they’re armed with), but when they arrived, although the packets said they were armed with Shuriken Cannons, they were in fact armed with Starcannons. Evidently the models were mis-labelled when they were first cast. So I called up Forge World and told them about the error, and the chap on the phone said they’d send me the correct models, and make sure they were checked to ensure they had the right armament. But when the replacements arrived on Friday, they too were armed with Starcannons.

I’m not sure whether there’s much point in ringing Forge World again. I suspect they have a whole batch of mis-labelled casts and if I complain about these then there’s every chance they’ll just send me another nine incorrect models. And I’m not sure I have any use for another nine Wave Serpent models. Since having the wrong armament certainly doesn’t make these models unusable, I might just give up at this stage.

Of course, all this Epic painting means my Blood Bowl stuff has been put on hold. I had painted up most of my orcs and had done a couple of Wicked Elves as well (which have come out really nicely), but finishing either team will probably have to wait.

  1. The first part reads like ‘Tales from a Young Unlucky Alf’. :)

When I used to do fly tying, I had this risk. Odd as it sounds, a towel over the lap and wearing shoes is the answer. Fly tying is actually more fascinating than the fly fishing, well, was for me anyway.

With scalpels – use No.10 blades if poss, as No.11s are very fragile. Change blades with small mole grips, not artery clamps, which is what you should use…but can slip.

    Hope toe recovers soon. :)
