The Wire

Have you been watching The Wire on BBC2 the last couple of weeks? It’s on every weeknight (except tomorrow, presumably because it’s Good Friday) 23.20-00.20 (give or take five minutes). Because if you haven’t, you need to start. Go find a torrent and download and watch episodes 1-9. You have until Monday to catch up.

(If, of course, you’re in some foreign country and can’t watch BBC2, fair enough. Either download the whole thing and watch it that way, or buy the DVD set, or watch it on a channel that’s showing it over there. Likewise, if you’re in the UK but have a TV subscription that includes FX and you already watched it there, then you don’t have to watch it again. Same goes if you’ve already seen it some other way, whatever.)

I could say that it’s the best TV drama I’ve seen for years, except that I haven’t actually watched that much TV for years, so that wouldn’t really mean much. So never mind what it is or isn’t better than; it’s bloody brilliant and that should be enough.

I almost managed to miss it myself. I wasn’t aware it was going to be on until I turned on the TV in order to set the satellite box to record something else (I forget what). I managed to turn on the TV just as the continuity announcer declared that it was on next, also mentioned that it was widely acclaimed as one of the greatest TV series of all time or some such. Having occasionally heard it mentioned before in positive tones, I decided to give it a go.

I nearly missed out. Make sure you don’t.

I believe you’ve already seen my own post on the show some time ago on my blog, but I’ve watched all 5 seasons now and I’m currently re-watching season 4 (which I think is the strongest season) with my girlfriend.

I think that it’s an HBO effort up there with the likes of The Sopranos or Six Feet Under. With HBO cancelling two of its other dramatic efforts before their intended end (Deadwood and Carnivale), the fact that this made its complete run successfully is a real blessing.

  2. I did see that, although I must confess that I had completely forgotten it in the year since.

Is it understandable for a Dutchie, when downloaded without subtitles?

^ I meant acquired, of course. Acquired.

  5. I don’t know for certain. It will require your careful attention; the dialogue certainly isn’t without its share of dialect and jargon. But you might manage.

Couldn’t hurt to give it a try.
