Android audio

Well, my project to create a custom WPS for Rockbox on Android has come to nothing. I did make a first attempt but I clearly got something wrong as it was so badly broken that it couldn’t even be displayed. I was planning to try again, but before I could do so, it was rendered entirely unnecessary by the discovery that, with some tweaking of settings, I could get PlayerPro to work more or less how I wanted in terms of playlist control, which had been the biggest reason I had wanted to stick with Rockbox.

With this being the case, the only significant advantage left to Rockbox was the fact I was already familiar with it and this wasn’t quite enough to justify the additional work involved. There were other advantages to using PlayerPro, too. Stability was one: the Android port of Rockbox is still at a pretty early stage of development and is quite buggy. I haven’t used PlayerPro enough to vouch for it as a particularly bug-free app, but it’s clearly a more stable and mature piece of software than Rockbox is.

There’s also the fact that it can be set to use lock screen widgets that allow access to basic controls (play/pause, skip etc.) without having to enter a code to allow access to the phone. Early experiments using it to provide music in dance lessons has shown that this is potentially very valuable.

So now I have an audio player that I’m reasonably happy with, I guess there’s no excuse left to put off the lengthy process of ripping over five hundred CDs so that I have something to play on it. This will take a while….
