I’m beginning to wonder whether I ought to change this blog’s subtitle to ‘mumblings of a demented Epic player’, since most of the posts at the moment seem to have something to do with Epic, but never mind. If you found the last post boring, you will probably find this one equally so, although it is at least somewhat shorter.
First up, I have finished painting the bike company since my last post, including a Chaos Lord and an Icon Bearer. Having failed to sculpt a banner for the latter out of Milliput, I had another go using Green Stuff instead, this time with much more success. Meanwhile the Lord, as with the Raptors, is just marked out by a fancy paint job.
I had been planning for a while to tear up my old stands of Imperial Space Marines and combine them with some Chaos models to put together new stands that mixed both Imperial and Chaos Space Marines, to give a more varied and, well, chaotic effect. However, my Chaos infantry boxes arrived from GW Mail Order yesterday, and I quickly discovered that this plan would need to be revised. The Chaos models are huge. Although the difference isn’t so huge that both sets of models can’t be used on the same battlefield without appearing out of scale (the scale difference between the infantry and vehicles is greater, but that isn’t enough to be immediately obvious either), it’s definitely enough that the Imperial Marines would be dwarfed by Chaos models on the same stand.
As a result, I have mostly kept my Imperial marines as they were, only changing the stands to add or rearrange character models. That the Chaos characters are a little bigger than the marines around them is less of a problem, since they are the natural focus of the stand anyway. I have now put together two CSM Retinues, one made from Imperial Space Marine models, and the other from Chaos figures. The only real worry in this new scheme was that I had planned to use Imperial Space Marine Chaplains to convert into Chaos Champions, but fortunately the character models are slightly bigger than the others, so neither Champion was dwarfed by the Chaos Marines he was supposedly leading.
As well as lots of infantry models, I have also gained quite a few spare bases, so I was able to start putting together some proper stands of Obliterators. So far I have two assembled, of which only the one is painted:
With spare bases available, I also decided to re-base my Thousand Sons, just leaving the space for a fifth model empty rather than trying to do anything particularly fancy.
I’ve now put together another two stands of Thousand Sons that are five strong including a Sorceror each (just a sorceror rather than a Sorceror Lord: he doesn’t give the unit any extra abilities or anything), and another stand of four.
